This modern masterpiece will impress the discerning few for its quality, craftsmanship and detail. ‘Maleny House’ is a shining example of modern Australian architecture on the Sunshine Coast’s hinterland.
For the award-winning Bark Design Architects, the brief was simple. Their expatriate Australian clients yearned for wide open spaces, an abundance of natural light and environmental sustainability. The result is iconic. Frank Lloyd Wright’s once famous quote reads “No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be ‘of’ the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other”.
Encapsulating this philosophy, ‘Maleny House’ celebrates its site, having minimal impact on its environment whilst taking advantage of the breathtaking views of the Glass House Mountains National Park, Brisbane and the ocean beyond.
Thanks to the expansive walls of toughened glass, the indoor spaces seem to absorb the outdoor surrounding landscape, engaging with its views and vegetation. The fusion of white polished stucco against natural wood creates shadow and depth to the expansive interior forms.
Beautifully landscaped gardens continue with the dedication to the architecture, succeeding to enrich the surrounding natural landscape while drawing from centuries of Japanese tradition, a culture rich with ceremony. The focus on minimalistic beauty and the traditional elements of Japanese garden combine the principles of balance and restraint to provide an unmistakable feeling of calm and peace.
A sacred element across cultures, walkways are designed to encourage contemplation. In this instance, the external walkways connect and surround the sanctuary of the inner courtyard and the representation of water symbolizes renewal and calm.
Interior spaces have been accessed to provide functionality, privacy when needed and collaborative spaces for entertaining. The main level offers a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, an expansive living room with fireplace and 5-meter ceilings features panels of glass that overlook the mountains. A gourmet kitchen and separate dining room all feature the bespoke finishes and attention to detail one would expect.
On the first level, the master offers again the panoramic ever changing views that one never tires of. Having a large walk in robe and large ensuite to accompany it. A glass walkway to separate the master leads to the family room and two further bedrooms, with access to ensuite.
A separate guesthouse connected by the courtyard has an acoustically sound designed music room/office, and also offers a guest bedroom and ensuite.
Located in the privacy of the hinterland, the home is also located close to all amenities and an hour away from Brisbane and International Airport.
